't changed, david, is that today in the gallup poll, obama's job approval is under 50. and job approval is the single best predictor of an incumbent president's ballot performance. i think that's number one. number two, i wouldn't hang too much on a single poll. remember on this day in 2000, al gore was ahead of george w. bush by two points. bush was leading him by about three points going into the last weekend. and went all the way to the supreme court. at this point in 1980, carter was leading reagan by four. there was a gallup with five days left that had him up by six. so i'm not particularizing this to chuck, but the pollsters and the press don't decide who shows up. the people who decide who shows up are the people knocking on doors, ringing door bells, making phone calls. and i think there's going to be a lot of surprises. >> but ed rendell, a lot of republicans like ralph like to go back to the reagan days. the difference is, as i have discussed this week with some pollsters, he was 20 points up after the convention. we had seen his ability to create wide swings. we haven't seen

into the obama category. but we have polled in all of them over the last couple of weeks. the president has leads ranging anywhere from two to eight points. but what was interesting, we asked a few other questions. including job approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if romney does do what chris christie said he will do, the first place you'll see it are in the five sta

battleground states, nine of them, we've been polling in nine of them, and all nine it's obama advantage across the board. look at ohio, plus seven. virginia, plus five. these are key states. is the race over? >> absolutely not. and that happened pretty quickly, right, david? you saw the change in those polls happen very quickly. and i'm here to tell you it can happen very quickly back the other way, and i think the beginning of that is wednesday night when governor romney for the first time gets on the same stage with the president of the united states and people can make a direct comparison about them and their visions for the future. and wednesday night is the restart of this campaign and i think you'll see the numbers start to move right back in the other direction. >> how do you restart a campaign, governor, at that last moment where you can reach tens of millions of people? why isn't it too late to believe that after you announce your running mate, after you have your own convention, that you can restart with the presidential debates? >> absolutely. you'll have tens of millions of people

polls shows president obama with pretty healthy leads, particularly in the big three, ohio, florida, and virginia. and that columbus dispatch poll, you know, nine points, we had it at -- >> seven or eight as well. >> and cbs had it at ten. more advertising, more campaigning, and think it's had an effect. >> it's funny. four years ago there were 15 states that barack obama and john mccain were advertising in. now it's down to nine. you know, so you're getting same amount of advertising dollars squeezed into nine states. almost overearn gaugement with with the battleground states. >> the battleground map has dramatically decreased. we're in fewer states. you're not seeing, for example, the obama campaign talked about maybe we'll go into arizona or texas and georgia. they didn't. the obama campaign had long been looking at pennsylvania and michigan. they didn't. remember, in florida eight years ago we were talking about democrats playing missouri and even west virginia at one point or throwing money down to get the other side to spend money or compete and while republicans were looking

in mitt romney's life, there's no question, david's going to remind us that obama is leading in the polls, this is really make or break. do you think romney will do it? do you expect to hear a sharp, clear message on lowering middle class tax rates, and do you think he'll do it? and a pro growth package. >> i these he'll make a passioned plea for the economic tax cuts he's already talked about. i don't think he's going to pound home that message. i think paul ryan did. maybe you'll see more from paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. i think he's going focus on regulation and all that stuff. >> let me ask you, a built of a warning to you. >> i will not gloat. i will never gloat. >> you may be right and that's okay. romney took a machete and lifted newt gingrich's head off. and later on romney took maybe a different cleaner machete and took rick santorum's head off. obama on the other hand has been surrounded by doughy psycho fans, he hasn't been in any hand to hand combat. he hasn't had any debating experience, he's gone soft. that's why romney might just pull a real upset here. >> i'

tonight. the latest poll shows president obama and mitt romney locked in a tight race nationally. but where it counts, those battle ground states, the president still leads. and here's another interesting poll. most people think the president will win the first debate which may be why he's trying to lower expectations. >> i know folks in the media are speculating already on who's going to have the the zingers. governor romney is good. i'm just okay. >> and paul ryan played his own version. >> president obama is a gifted speaker. he's been on the national stage for many years. he's done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> but if all candidates are trying to lower expectations, maybe chris christie missed that memo. >> governor romney's going to lay out his vision for a better and greater america for greater opportunity for all of our citizens. and i think that's when you're going to see this race really start to tighten and move in governor romney's direction. come thursday morning, the entire narrative of this race is going to chan

, kentucky. heading into the series, the latest polls show that nationally the obama-romney race is still close. but the president is moving ahead in most of the battle ground states. to get a sense of where the race stands, and what each campaign believes the candidates must do in those debates, we're joined by our regular duo, stuart rothenberg of the "rothenberg political report" and "roll call," and susan page, washington bureau chief of "u.s.a. today." welcome back to both of you. >> good to be here. woodruff: we just reported again, stu, nationally the race looks pretty close but in the battle ground states the president seems to have lead. what do you make of all that? >> that's exactly the case. national numbers show obama leadingy two to four points. some polls have it it a little bit more. it's in the swing states particularly critical ohio where the obama lead appears to be four- to eight-points, something in that range. there are two possible regulations. one is state-specific factors that are affecting voters in those states. for example, in virginia and ohio, a better-than-a

. >> the primary focus of this week's debate is domestic policy. >> a new poll from the washington post shows president obama leading among swing state voters. 52% of likely voters in battleground states say they would vote for the president if the election were today. 41% say they woo pick mr. romney. those numbers are similar from the washington post polls, in florida, ohio and virginia. >> developing overseas tonight, a grim milestone in the war in afghanistan. the death toll for u.s. troops has now reached 2,000. the most recent deaths came this weekend. two americans killed when a fire fight broke out between u.s. forces and their afghan army allies. the afghan defense ministry said the battle was a result of a quote, misunderstanding between international forces and afghan soldiers. >> i think the signature attack that we're beginning to see is going to be the insider attack. >> this is something we have to discuss in detail, something that i feel a responsibility to correct. >> more than 50 international security assistants and four service members have been killed this year in attacks

, you wouldn't give that incumbent president much of a prayer in that election. the polls suggest that barack obama, right now, would win. how has he managed to avoid public retribution for not fixing the economy better than he has done? >> this is not a normal time. the damage done to the economy could not be fully repaired in four years. and most of the debt that's been run up on his watch is a direct result of the economic collapse. first the recession that began in 2007 and the economic collapse that happened in 2008, which has driven tax revenues below 15% of income for the first time in 50 years and driven spending above 21% of income because so many people are on unemployment and food stamps and medicaid, medical assistance. if we had, when the economy recovers, a higher rate of growth, which it will in a year or so, what's going to happen is nothing happen. tax receipts go up 17%. spending will drop to under 21%. there will still be a substantial deficit, but it will be smaller. president obama's main contribution to this $16 billion debt, which is a trillion dollar debt,

look at the polls -- >> let me restate that. americans do care. is it going to move people from obama to romney? >> unlikely for two reasons. one is that the president is still seen as stronger on foreign policy. there's been some up and down, but in the latest polls he's still seen as pretty strong, and also people care more about the economy. i think governor romney has an obligation to talk about foreign policy, though. and the linkage is what i still think is their strongest case. why do you think the next four years would be any different than the last four years? primarily they've got to make that argument on the economy. i think making it on the arab spring and ton the middle east s not a bad political line. >> we'll get to the polls in just a second. i'll try this on you, john, do you think hearing paul ryan talk about president obama's foreign policy is going to move people from obama to romney? >> i'm not -- i don't think paul ryan matters very much, certainly on a foreign policy story. >> do you think it worked? >> i think there's a sequence of things that's going to happen
